 About the series

Join us for SAMBA's Dirty Days, a series of recreational rides at some new, some old, and some classic mountain biking destinations in the Adelaide region.

At Craigburn Farm you can experience some of the first purpose built singletrack on DENR managed land, while at Belair National Park you can undertake a skills session and then put those new found skills to use as you ride a shared-use fire trail network through koala filled eucalyptus forest as part of a led group ride. At Prospect Hill you'll experience a mix of open fire track among native forest and purpose built singletrack through the pines and the fairy forest.

The final event at Cudlee Creek highlights the jewel in the crown of South Australia's mountain bike trail network and will give you the opportunity to ride the largest network of purpose built singletrack near Adelaide and see how far your skills have progress over the series of events. This event at Cudlee Creek will have options for longer loops and more technical riding if that's the challenge you are seeking.

For those new to mountain biking it also provides an opportunity to perhaps ride your first pieces of singletrack on the welcoming 'beginner friendly' trails at Cudlee Creek.

SAMBA is actively involved in Trail Care at both Prospect Hill and Cudlee Creek so you'll be able to ride the trails at these events and then find out more about how the trails are built to last the test of time by those who build and maintain them, the SAMBA Trail Care Teams.

What you will receive as a registered rider:

  • Experienced ride leaders and instructors to teach you specific mountain biking skills and to take you on led rides to practice your skills on the trails
  • Marked loops to ride at your own pace or a led ride (15 to 30km for intermediate riders)
  • Refreshments including water, Nippy's juice and fruit cake
  • Basic mechanical support and 1st aid provided by the ride leaders
  • A great time riding on some of the best trails Adelaide has to offer!!!

Dirty Days done and dusted for 2013

The third and final SAMBA Dirty Days took place at Cudlee Creek last Sunday 28 October 2012 under clear blue skies. Led by the ride leaders the loop took in mostly single track through a mixture of pine forest and regenerating native forest along trails such as 'the Outcrops', 'Finger in the Pie', 'Immaculate Compaction' and the 'Point of Knoll Return' negotiating rocky outcrops and even a few jumps, while a handful even took on the infamous 'Log Jump'. We trust that all the people who came out and rode with SAMBA over the three events had a great time, were introduced to some new trails around Adelaide and shared their love for mountain biking with some new found friends.

Keep your eyes on the Bike SA and SAMBA website in 2013 for Dirty Days MKII or similar MTB events. including the Kona Dirty Weekend in May. We hope to see you all again and thanks to all the SAMBA volunteers for leading rides, skills sessions, marking trails and keeping the kettles boiled that made these events such a success and great fun for all involved.

Prospects are good for another Dirty Day

The first ever SAMBA Dirty Day at Belair NP and Craigmore Farm was a huge success. The mass of riders was split into two groups, one riding the easier trails around Belair, while the rest rode onto Craigburn Farm to explore the recently established trail network. Perfect weather, plenty of fast, flowing single track, some short sharp climbs and beautiful views to the coast. Next up is Prospect Hill on 30 September.

For the second of our Dirty Days you get the chance to explore the fantastic trails of Prospect Hill and to get a very different experience from the Belair and Craigburn event. Prospect Hill is a unique trail destination with features and trail will keep you on your toes like the slippery roots and bar grabbing narrow squeezes of the Fairy Forest, but that also provides plenty of scope for skill development and introduction to singletrack like the fast rolling and twisting trails through the pines with any landings being cushioned by a carpet of pine needles.

For those that love the singletrack (and judging by the number of you that took the option of riding at Craigburn Farm at Dirty Days #1, that will be many of you) there will be an intermediate ride following a marked loop of approximately 10 km of singletrack exploring the core network of trail that is used in xc races. For those still looking for some helpful hints and honing your MTB skills, there will be another skills session. This time it will be 'on trail', working on specific skill development. There will also be a beginners ride starting out on fire road, as in Belair, and then introducing you all the joys of singletrack (be careful, you may never look back!).

So what better way to shake off any AFL Grand Final hangovers or long weekend blues than with SAMBA at the second Dirty Day event. Ride purpose built singletrack in the pines, learn how to jump or rail corners and learn more about Trailcare from one of SAMBA's very own Trailcare gurus on the day. You may even be tempted to raise a shovel or mattock in the name of trail creativity, or save that for the next scheduled Trailcare activity at Prospect Hill, Eagle MTB Park or Cudlee Creek.

Let's just hope that the trail gods will bring some more fine weather and some dry trail to help celebrate the end of winter!

The Ride Guide will be availbale by mid September so watch this space! You can already register here.
